The Dangers of Tetanus

Tetanus, otherwise known as lockjaw, is a relatively rare yet quite severe illness. This disease is distinguished by its symptoms of locked or tensed up muscle fibers. When left untreated, those suffering from this condition will experience very painful and incapacitating symptoms. Individuals may contract tetanus by encountering clostridium tetani bacteria in an open wound. In order to prevent catching such a terrible disease, many people choose to receive an immunization shot, which should be repeated every 10 years.

Premises Liability

Under premises liability law, property possessors (typically owners) owe a duty of care to their invitees and guests. It is their responsibility to keep the area well maintained, safe and risk-free. This includes ensuring that tetanus hazards – including exposed rusty nails and other sharp metal objects – do not pose a safety hazard. Invitees who are injured by a dangerous presence on the property may have the right to pursue legal damages from the responsible party.

Tetanus Injuries

Those who have contracted tetanus will experience a number of symptoms that, if left untreated, will worsen over time. The health effects of tetanus include the following:

  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Sweating
  • Irritability
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Muscle spasms
  • Locked jaw

Without proper medical care, tetanus may even lead to death.
