Mother sues for son’s birth injuries

An Iowa hospital and doctor are facing a medical malpractice lawsuit after a mother and her newborn son were injured during delivery. The mother is claiming medical negligence by the hospital and staff resulted in their injuries.

In February 2008, the woman came into the hospital in active labor but was not taken into surgery for a Caesarean section until more than eight hours later. She says a botched and delayed delivery resulted in her son’s skull deformity, skull fracture, and subdural hemorrhages.

During the Caesarean section, the mother suffered a laceration on her bladder. The laceration then became infected and led to a pelvic abscess, a wound separation, and bowel obstruction.

Man wins slip and fall lawsuit against Starbucks

A San Diego Superior Court jury awarded a man $7.5 million last week in his slip and fall lawsuit against Starbucks Coffee Co.

According to court documents, the man was visiting the coffee shop in 2008 when he fell on the wet floor. Complications from a head injury he sustained in the fall have prevented him from returning to work as a chiropractor. The jury found Starbucks Coffee Co. negligent in maintaining its property.

The man’s wife has been awarded $1 million of the verdict money for loss of consortium and the remaining will compensate the man for his medical expenses, lost income, and loss of enjoyment of life.
